You might think that choosing an engagement ring would be a simple process. However, even if you have decided that you want to buy a diamond solitaire, the choice can still be enormous and overwhelming. The number of different cuts of the diamond can be baffling. One of the most fashionable at the moment is asscher cut engagement rings. This cut which has been used for over 100 years has more recently been popularized by celebrities such as Mariah Carey and Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson. It has also featured on TV in “Sex and the City” when the character Charlotte is presented with a magnificent asscher cut engagement ring.
At first glance an asscher cut diamond looks much like an emerald cut diamond; in fact it is sometimes called a square emerald cut. The major difference is that the asscher cut is square while the emerald is rectangular. First used by the Asscher brothers of Holland in the early 20th century, from whom the cut gets its name.
The Asscher diamond company is still owned by the same family and since Queen Juliana of the Netherlands bestowed the title upon them in 1980 they have been known as the Royal Asscher Diamond Company. This company has now developed and patented the Royal Asscher cut for diamonds which is based upon the traditional asscher cut but with greater precision and symmetry. They are therefore the only company that is permitted to use the Royal Asscher name on diamonds although many other jewelers produce the more usual asscher cut. Joseph Asscher is famous for cutting the Cullinan Diamond the majority of which is part of the British Crown Jewels.
Try and visit the royalasscher.com website and feast your eyes on the wonderful rings displayed there. Such as, an incredible blue sapphire in a band of platinum channel set with diamonds, all asscher cut of course, in their “irresistible” collection. Or how about the huge Royal Asscher cut pink sapphire and pave diamonds in the “Spellbound” collection. Even if these particular rings are beyond your budget it can certainly open your eyes to what is available beyond the classic diamond solitaire.
The shape of an asscher cut stone is square but with the corners cut off so that it is in reality an octagon. It is cut in such a way as to draw the eye into the depths of the stone.
The asscher cut makes a fabulous diamond solitaire for an engagement ring but it can also look visually stunning as the central stone in a trilogy with a round brilliant cut diamond either side. Alternatively the central stone could be a ruby, emerald or sapphire.
